Intersection - A Rodeo Beach Station Project

This project explores the limitation of “intersection” as a concept— pushing the intersection of human made and nature, fabrication and scenery, of light and dark, of exposure and enclosure through its formal composition, space planning, site, materials and experience.

Upon initial scrutiny of the site, it becomes apparent that three primary elements dominate its core: the beach, the parking lot, and the wetlands. In essence, the project operates as an intricate nexus and transitional zone, seamlessly integrating these three components. Through a strategic overlay of spaces, a novel array of interstitial zones emerges. These spaces, meticulously configured, serve diverse purposes, functioning as black box programs, neutral areas, or transitional spaces.

The intentional arrangement of these spaces optimizes convenience. For instance, the convergence of the shower, bike and surfboard maintenance room, and locker facilitates seamless access for bikers and surfers to their essential areas. The resulting space serves as a dry changing room, providing a swift transition for those seeking a quick change from the locker rooms, while surfers can stow their boards and effortlessly access the wet shower room. Alternatively, individuals arriving from the bus or parking lot, emphasizing the experiential aspect of the station, can access the multipurpose hall through the reception area, leading to the main hall or the café.

The Rodeo Beach building serves as a convergence point for diverse experiences, manifested through the intersecting programs. Expanding upon this theme, the landscape design contributes to the overarching concept. Decks and planted areas are thoughtfully positioned to align with programmatic functions, fostering intersectionality. Moreover, the design facilitates the harmonious integration of the wetland into the outdoor deck area, preserving indigenous flora and accommodating environmental considerations.

In terms of architectural structure, the concept of "stepping" echoes the site's edge condition, maintaining the integrity of native soils and grounds. Varied building heights establish a hierarchical arrangement of spaces, concurrently creating opportunities for skylights and sky windows. The functionality of these elements evolves based on the time of day, enhancing the overall dynamism and adaptability of the building.
