The Column to Volume Project is a 5 part project that explores architectural form, space, representation, and precedents. One first starts with a precedent column [COPY], then [PASTE] it into a 3 dimensional grid, with the student having to make conscious design choices to perform various alterations such as scaling, pasting, transforming etc. the original column. The 3rd part is [TRANSLATE] the columnar grid structure into a wire frame tessellation with new rules, in an exploration of new spacial possibilities. This then brings us to [ADD], adding panels to the previous tessellated frame, resulting in a tessellated mass where faces are supported by the underlying frame. The last part is [DRAW], making drawings of the final compound mass, and develop interior spaces through drawings.
